BGB News - 1st Week of February 2021
During this Wednesday's weekly livestream, Jamey Stegmaier announced Stonemaier Games' first release of 2021 - Red Rising: The Board Game.
Based on the best-selling novels by Pierce Brown, Red Rising is a game that long-time Stonemaier Games fans will know has been in development for a long time, with Jamey Stegmaier (Scythe, Tapestry, Viticulture) first discussing getting the rights from the author way back in 2017. Now, 4 years later and with help from co-designer Alex Schmidt, that dream is finally going to be a reality.. While details about the game are still sparse (short design diaries with more details are being posted daily), we do have an official description of the game from the publisher's website:
"Enter the futuristic universe of Red Rising, based on the book series by Pierce Brown featuring a dystopian society divided into 14 castes. You represent a house attempting to rise to power as you piece together an assortment of followers (your hand of cards). Will you break the chains of the Society or embrace the dominance of the Golds?
Red Rising is a hand-management, combo-building game for 1-6 players (45-60 minute playing time). You start with a hand of 5 cards, and on your turn you will deploy 1 of those cards to a location on the board, activating that location’s benefit. You will then gain the top card from another location (face up) or the deck (face down), adding it to your hand as you enhance your end-game point total."
The collector's edition of the game is expected to be available for preorder directly from Stonemaier Games sometime in March, followed by a retail release shortly thereafter. Now until February 16th, for every person who signs up to be notified of the preorder HERE, Stonemaier Games will donate $1 to the ACLU.
