GenCon Goes Hybrid

BGB News - 3rd Week of March 2021

According to a recent announcement made this week, GenCon 2021 has been postponed from its planned August 5 - 8 dates and will instead be held in a new hybrid format September 16 - 19. Both in-person options (in Indianapolis as well as at Pop-Ups around he country) and online attendance options will be available. Here's an excerpt from the official announcement:

"Today, we’re announcing that we are postponing Gen Con 2021 as originally planned for August 5-8 in Indianapolis and announcing plans for a hybrid slate of concurrent in-person and online experiences, including the rescheduled Indy convention, this September 16-19, 2021. We believe this is the best approach both to meet the many challenges of the moment and to explore possibilities for the future.
By offering a flexible range of opportunities to participate, we hope to safely include the largest number of people in the Gen Con experience this year and adapt to conditions as they are in September..."

In light of the announcement, some legitimate concerns have been raised by the gaming community over the safety of returning to in-person conventions so soon, but the folks at GenCon have insisted that all appropriate safety measures will be in place, including a "modified format" in accordance with local health and safety guidelines and capped attendance based on the current state of the Pandemic come September. Those that already have badges (rolled over from last year's cancelled event) will be able to roll-over their badges to next year (or get a refund or credit) if they are unable or unwilling to attend.

As of this time, badge, hotel and event registration dates have not yet been announced.
